Saturday Challenge #17 At the Zoo

I've been looking around at different challenge blogs and I ALWAYS want to participate, but I just never find the time to get the cards done during the week. Well, tonight I came home and made a simple baby card for a shower I'm attending next week. Then I log on and see that there's a challenge over at Secret Crafter involving zoo animals, so... YAY I get to enter a challenge!

January 30th- Do you know what today is?

January 30th is Kazoo Day!

Don't ask me why I find kazoos interesting, but I figured I would share what I found out because I know you are waiting in desperation to learn more about this fantastic instrument. And so I will not hesitate any longer to share what I read on wikipedia.

The kazoo is a device that adds a "buzzing" timbral quality to a player's voice when one vocalizes into it. The kazoo is a type of mirliton - a device which modifies the sound of a person's voice by way of a vibrating membrane.

Such instruments have been used in Africa for hundreds of years, to disguise the sound of somebody's voice or to imitate animals, often for various ceremonial purposes. It was on such an instrument that the kazoo, invented by an African American named Alabama Vest in the 19th century in Macon, Georgia, is based. The first kazoo was manufactured to Vest's specifications by Thaddeus von Clegg, a German clockmaker in Macon. The kazoo was first publicized at the Georgia State Fair in 1852. The first metal kazoos were manufactured and patented in Eden, New York, where they are still made in the original factory.

The title of this blog links to the wikipedia page and here's a link to the factory.

This video is hilarious- if a bit strange.

Have a great day!

Aloha Friday #66

It's that time again!

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that people take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So on Fridays I will be taking it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link at An Island Life.

Today’s question is: What is the one thing you CAN NOT stand in another person's personality?

For me, I absolutely HATE IT when people are disrespectful to children. Once I see a person treat a child badly, I'm done- no matter what. I just find it completely unforgivable- and that goes double if it's my child.

(This is something I dealt with this week and I needed to get it off my chest, so I'm on a soapbox. Sorry and thanks for listening- I do feel a bit better.)

Have a fabulous day!

Thoughtful Thursday: Perseverance Quotes

I'm having some struggles at work lately and to get out bed this morning seems like a monumental task, so here's a blog with a few quotes to inspire me and I hope you too.

The drops of rain make a hole in the stone not by violence but by oft falling. ~Lucretius

He conquers who endures. ~Persius

Fall seven times, stand up eight. ~Japanese Proverb

Nobody trips over mountains. It is the small pebble that causes you to stumble. Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find you have crossed the mountain. ~Author Unknown

The road to success is dotted with many tempting parking places. ~Author Unknown

Vitality shows in not only the ability to persist but the ability to start over. ~F. Scott Fitzgerald

Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday. ~Author Unknown

When your dreams turn to dust, vacuum. ~Author Unknown

Don't let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish something stand in the way of your doing it. The time will pass anyway; we might just as well put that passing time to the best possible use. ~Earl Nightingale

This last one is probably my all time favorite quote and usually helps me remember that every moment matters and I must keep going no matter what.

I hope you have found something here that inspires you- as for me, I guess I better get moving. :)

Have a fabulous day!

Mojo Monday #70- My First!

I found this fabulous site where they post a sketch each week and challenge the readers to make a card following it. I loved the idea and couldn't wait to give it a try. So here's my take on the above sketch- you can see that I tweaked it just a bit.

January 18th- Do You Know What Today Is?

I know you're thinking it's football playoffs day, right? But it's also Winnie the Pooh Day!

I never knew he had his own day until recently and I have to say, I think it's deserved, here's why. My mom has always been a fan, but I never really got it growing up. I'm from the generation BEFORE he was huge, but now he's so commercialized and kind of everywhere which usually turns me off. However, when you stop and listen to the stories, it's hard not be charmed.

Here are a few of the quotes I found from that silly old bear, click the blog title for a quick list of more.

When late morning rolls around and you're feeling a bit out of sorts, don't worry; you're probably just a little eleven o'clockish.

A little Consideration, a little Thought for Others, makes all the difference.

If ever there is tomorrow when we’re not together.. there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart.. I’ll always be with you.

Poetry and Hums aren't things which you get, they're things which get you. And all you can do is go where they can find you.

Promise me you'll never forget me because if I thought you would I'd never leave.

Some people care too much, I think it's called love.

If the person you are talking to doesn't appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in his ear.

Nobody can be uncheered by a balloon.

If there ever comes a day when we can't be together keep me in your heart, I'll stay there forever.

Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day.

If you live to be 100, I hope I live to be 100 minus 1 day, so I never have to live without you.

Have a fabulous day!

Valentine Goody Swap

Ah, Valentine's Day- either you love it or you hate it. Personally, I wasn't looking forward to it much until I found this goody swap over at An Island Life. Now I can't wait! Here's my quick survey...

* What is your idea of a romantic Valentine’s Day? stars, music, and a back rub
* In reality, what is your Valentine’s Day really like? 30 over-sugared children passing out cute cards
* If you could have a lifetime supply of your favorite sweet indulgence, what would it be? I'm open to anything chocolate, but #1 is probably Reeses.
* Is there any sweet treat you absolutely do not like? nah- sugar is sugar
* If you fell into a pool of chocolate, how would you get out? um, eat/drink it?

Have a fabulous day!

Aloha Friday #1

I stumbled on this and loved the idea- so here it is. :o)

Today’s question is: Who is your favorite actor or actress?

My all time FAVORITE actor is TOM HANKS and actress Julia Roberts, but I'm also a huge Reese Witherspoon fan.

Have a fabulous day!

January 13th- Do you know what today is?

January 13th is Poetry Break Day! Take a break to read one of my favorite poems.

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

- e.e. cummings

Friday Favorites: My Sweet Tooth

As I've been creating valentines, I've also been looking at all the fabulicious creations of the other Etsyians. Here are some of my favorites...

There's plenty of deliciousness to be found over at Papercakes. I especially love these 3-D Cupcakes, the original inspirations for this blog. They are hand painted and glittered, with a tasty little jewel on top.

Another place for charmingly sweet items is The Striped Cherry. This Chocolate Brown Beanie is both cute and versatile. The cupcake bow is on an alligator clip, which can be worn as a barrette or switched out for another bow from this darling shop.

My favorite place to visit for sugary sweet, but calorie-free inspiration is Fruit Fly Pie. This shop has many delightful offerings, my favorite is the Chunky Chip Muffin Trinket Box in Aqua Mint, perfect for storing my earrings or other small items.

Cherry Valentino Designs, just the shop name sounds delectable doesn't it? Imagine how much my mouth watered when I saw this Adorable Cupcake Painting. I love the way it wraps around the edge of the canvas.

If you want some sweetness that's also a little green, head on over to Clanne04's shop where they feature upcycled notebooks. The Cupcake Mix Notebook is a scrumptiously satisfying way to save the planet.

As an AZ girl, I quickly tire of cold and gloomy mornings, but I bet this cute as a Cupcake Hat would brighten any day. I found it at NinisHandmades and it's available in sizes for both children and adults.

I love sweet surprises and I think finding this Cupcake Heaven Coin Pouch in your purse qualifies as one of the sweetest. This pretty piece from HBT Designs is perfect for keeping all the little items in your purse organized and looks yummy too.

Of all the cards I've seen, one of my favorites is at Expressions By Devin. Her handmade So Sweet valentine features a delicious looking cupcake. Thanks for checking out some of my favorites. I hope you have an amazing weekend.

Ten Things Tuesday: My Weaknesses

Today's ten things are my TOP TEN WEAKNESSES (in no particular order)!

I don't have any serious vices- no drug, tobacco, or alcohol addictions here- but I sure do have an addictive personality. Here's a list of some of the things I truly think I would struggle to live without...

1. Candy: My mouth is already watering just thinking about peppermint patties, dark chocolate, circus peanuts, and orange slices- mmmmmmmm.... YUMMY!

2. Books: I must have over 3,000 in my possession, but only two sit on my nightstand, The Bible and The Great Gatsby.
I love this clay bee ornament I found on Etsy. The Great Gatsbee

3. Reality TV Competitions: Project Runway, Survivor, The Amazing Race, Top Chef, and Hell's Kitchen. I don't care if it's real or not. I find it entertaining. :)

4. Competitive Sports: I LOVE the Olympics and basketball!

5. Diet Pepsi: I'll be honest, this is my security blanket. I always turn here when I'm stressed- but I try very hard to drink plenty of water too!

6. Avocados: OK, I know they have a lot of fat, but it's the good kind and they're just so creamy and delicious- I'm a little distrusting of people who don't like them! Check out these adorable earrings. Awesome Avocado Dangle Earrings

7. Rainbow Sherbet: When you're from AZ, you can't live without some type of frozen treat, plus rainbow sherbet has great memories for me.

8. Crazy Socks: I'm a hillbilly at heart (just like my mother, grandmother, and daughter-lol) and I hate to wear shoes. So when I kick off my sneakers I like a surprise. My favorite is a pair that have purple glow in the dark turtles.

9. Itunes: How fabulous is it that I can log into the internet and download nearly any song I want? My music collection is quickly approaching the size of my book collection and I couldn't be happier!

10. Great Blogs for Reading: I love browsing and can get lost for hours at a time. If that's not a weakness I don't know what is!

I'm sure there are probably another 100 things I could add to this list, but it's only Ten Things Tuesday, not 100!

What are your weaknesses? I'd love to know.

January 5th- Do you know what today is?

January 5th is bird day!

To be honest, I am deathly afraid of birds. People always think I'm crazy when I say that, until I tell them why...

At the tender age of seven, I was terrorized by a horrid little girl and a flock of birds at a McDonald's playground. I don't remember all of the details, who knows if I was being naughty as well, but I certainly did not deserve to have french fries thrown at my head!

All I remember is the birds flying straight at my face and me running away screaming. The other girl thought it was so funny that she chased me and continued throwing the fries.

To this day, I hate to eat on patios and am extremely afraid of flying birds. LOL- Seaworld was quite an adventure.

Have a fabulous day!

Check out the "Birdfeeder Tails" ACEOs in Giddyupstudio's shop, this one is my favorite, it's called Fat Bird Rising.

January 4th- Do you know what today is?

January 4th is Trivia Day!

Here's a great trivia question for you...

When Barack Obama becomes President of the United States on January 20th, he will be the fifth youngest man to be sworn into the office, but who was the youngest? It's not who you think, and don't cheat!

Is there a nicer word for procrastination?

OK, let's be honest, I must be one of the best procrastinators in history. You doubt me I'm sure. After all, many people share my talent, but I can prove my claims. Today, I shall treat you to one example of my greatness.

Example #1 The Broken Windshield

About a year ago, I was driving on the freeway (actually on my way to get my registration renewed at the DMV the day before it expired, ironically enough) and a rock hit my windshield. A little tiny chip- really not a big deal. I have full glass coverage so all I had to do was call my insurance company and have them send someone out to fix it. It would literally take less than 30 minutes of my time for the phone call and repair combined, but did I do it?

Please... would I be writing this blog if I did?

Three months later, I come out of work to find that the scorching Arizona sun has enlarged my tiny chip from the size of a pencil eraser to three sprawling cracks that completely cover my windshield. Now would be an excellent time to call the insurance company, right?

Perhaps... if I were an amateur procrastinator.

Fast forward another 8 months (yes, 11 months after the initial chip) and I am STILL driving around with three cracks that run the entire length of my windshield. At this point, I know if I don't fix it now, it will probably be another year before I get around to it. So I actually look up the phone number. And write it down. And plan to make the phone call. Except... I don't.

Well, last weekend (a full year from the rock incident) a friend of mine decided to take matters into his own hands. We were having a lovely dinner and he offered to buy me a drink- IF I made the phone call.

Well, let's just say that it's amazing how motivating a well-made margarita can be!

So, I made the call, enjoyed a fabulous drink, and on Monday had my windshield fixed. I was truly proud of myself for accomplishing the task, but...

Today I drove on the freeway for the first time since getting my windshield fixed.

NO, there was no rock, thank goodness.

However, there IS a terrible squealing sound made by the air that is passing along the edges of my windshield. It would seem that the windshield wasn't sealed correctly and I need to call the glass company to have the problem corrected.

Yeah... I'll get right on that!

Friday Favorites: Journals

If you read my blog yesterday, you already know:

We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day. ~Edith Lovejoy Pierce

But where shall we write about our opportunities? I offer you some ideas, consider this my treasury.

I love this journal- talk about a conversation starter! Plus, I'm a little silly about the covers of my notebooks, I hate it when they get bent or torn and that would never happen to this journal. What a great way to go green! FLOPPY DISK Geek Gear Notebook

Speaking of going green, would you ever guess that this journal was upcycled and recycled? The cover began as a cereal box and the filler paper is recycyled too. I'd say this product helps the environment and looks good doing it. I LOVE YOU Mini Journal

I've found the perfect place for all my favorite sarcastic quotes, check it out! Let's see, I think I'll start with this one: "He who breaks a resolution is a weakling; he who makes one is a fool." ~F.M. Knowles Quote Book

And finally, here is my ideal journal, the one I've dreamed about since I was a little graceful girl. It's so pretty, it makes me feel like a fairy princess and it has 240 pages so I think it would take me the entire year to fill it up. Soft Blue with Jade Box Book

Thanks for checking out some of my favorites. I hope you have an amazing weekend.

Thoughtful Thursday: New Years Quotes

Happy New Year!!! How appropriate that my first Thoughtful Thursday blog lands on New Year's Day! One of my favorite things to collect is fabulous quotes, so here are a few to begin 2009 with.

For last year's words belong to last year's language
And next year's words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
~T.S. Eliot, "Little Gidding"

One resolution I have made, and try always to keep, is this: To rise above the little things. ~John Burroughs

We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential. ~Ellen Goodman

May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions. ~Joey Adams

We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day. ~Edith Lovejoy Pierce

Check back tomorrow to see where I will be writing my book.
